Anti-slip flooring

Anti-slip floor coatings and resin systems for wet, oily or sloped areas.

Slip resistance is usually tested with the pendulum test (BS 7976) and reported as a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). HSE guidance treats a PTV of 36 or above as low slip potential.

Grip comes from aggregate (such as quartz or aluminium oxide) broadcast into or mixed with the coating. More aggregate means more grip but a floor that is harder to clean, so the right balance depends on the contaminant: water, oil, flour or grease.

Common uses: loading bays, ramps, food production, commercial kitchens, wash-down areas and walkways.

Frequently asked questions

What slip rating do I need?

It depends on the area and what ends up on the floor. Ask contractors to state the expected PTV in wet conditions and to explain how it will be tested.

Can anti-slip be added to an existing floor?

Often yes, as an anti-slip coating over a sound existing floor, but the contractor needs to survey the substrate first.
